A press photographer is found dead, plunging the criminal investigator Leo headlong into a troubling moral conflict. All the available evidence points toward Leo’s old school friend Kai as the killer. Even though Kai has already been convicted of breaking and entering in the past, Leo, unlike his partner Nina, can’t imagine his old pal as being capable of murder.

Still, the mounting evidence seems to strengthen the case against Kai. They find the stolen goods in the trunk of his car and the crime lab detects traces of chemicals used in photo processing on the inside of the vehicle. When they attempt to bring in Kai for questioning, he flees.

A tip from a colleague puts them back on his trail and after a reckless, high-speed chase Leo manages to catch up with Kai. But when Nina arrives, he has already disappeared again – clearly Leo allowed his old buddy to escape – leaving Nina fuming about his unprofessional behaviour.

Then new evidence found at the crime scene leads the investigation in a surprising new direction. The two discover that this burglary was just the latest in a series, with all the victims being photographers. In each case the thief’s target has been negatives of photos taken at the high-society parties hosted by the millionaire Joe Leissen.

When it surfaces that one of the photographers was blackmailing Leissen, Leo and Nina prepare an elaborate trap to snare the elusive and dangerous killer…
