During an experiment on alcohol consumption, one participant suffers a severe heart attack – an incident that is proved to be no fault of the medical institute. The participant was found to have a medication in his blood that is known to be fatal in combination with alcohol. He survived the incident but barely… he remains in a comatose state…

Investigators Mark and Rebecca quickly identify the patient as the journalist Peter Kiesel, who took part in the experiment undercover. Suspicion falls on his chief editor, who had sent the unwilling journalist on the assignment. It could also have been any one of Kiesel’s numerous enemies getting revenge for being written up in his career-destroying articles.

A complex investigation made by the journalist concerning driving under the influence of alcohol leads the investigators to believe that Kiesel might have been murdered by a former alcoholic who had been responsible for a death while drunk driving. Bit by bit, Mark and Rebecca realize that the journalist’s investigation and subsequent article were not undertaken for purely unselfish reasons – in Kiesel’s background lies a driving while intoxicated tragedy.

Now the question is whether or not the article was written as simply a professional project or as a means to secure a burning personal revenge… which would bring yet another murder motive into the picture.

Mark’s estranged wife Anette is having a difficult time handling the combined burdens of being a single mother, a gynecologist and the mayor as well. To make matters worse, the medication sample used in the murder was stolen from her medical practice.
Mark is drawn to support Anette, which leads to a reconciliation of their differences.
Of course that makes everything even more complicated…
