Killer Bees

Karla receives an urgent call from a Mallorcan hospital. Her father Marcus, with whom she has not spoken in twenty years, has had an accident. Once at his bedside, her worry is mixed with hurt and the tension of all the things left unsaid between them.

Marcus’ condition is serious. His doctor Maria believes that an allergy to bees is to blame, but Karla can’t accept this simplified explanation.

There must be something more to explain the severity of his reaction…When Karla learns that Marcus probably won’t survive his “allergic shock”, she begins a frantic search for an anti-venom to save her father’s life. Along the way she finds precious assistance from Ben, a former entomologist and the beekeeper Pablo.

In the course of attempting to identify this puzzling species, they discover other humans and even horses that have also become victims. Although these aggressive bees also attack and destroy other bee colonies, they apparently have a comparatively short life span themselves.

As Karla, Pablo and Ben dig deeper into the mystery, it begins to dawn on them that they are dealing with an entirely new species of bee – one for whom no anti- venom has yet been developed.
Karla has only one chance: to locate the killer bees and have an antidote developed, but she has more than elusive bees to deal with: When an unidentified driver runs Karla and Ben off the road and into the Mediterranean Sea, it seems that somebody is dead set on sabotaging their mission.

They survive the harrowing experience but are left deeply shocked. Ben is quite sure he knows exactly who had attempted to kill them - Alvarez, the head of the Entomology Department. For a long time, the university has been controlled by a company, whose main profits have been generated by illegal genetic engineering. There is a possibility that the faculty itself had created the killer bees.

Furious, Karla wants to immediately confront Alvarez, but Ben stops her. He admits that he has worked for Alvarez in the past and if he is really responsible for the development of this new species, then her life is surely in danger.

Meanwhile, the deadly plague is spreading, with tourists on the beach falling victim to the raging swarm of thousands of stinging bees. At this point their fate is uncertain, because no antidote to their venom has yet been developed…
