The German journalist Katharina Wagner returns to a frosty St. Petersburg to show her eight-year-old son Nikolai the grave of his father, a Russian journalist who had committed suicide several months earlier.








But the trip becomes a mother’s worst nightmare when Nikolai suddenly disappears without a trace in the vast St. Petersburg subway complex…










In the midst of her desperate search, the Scottish scrap dealer Adam Markowski suddenly appears out of nowhere and offers his help. Although not understanding his motivations, Katharina is nevertheless grateful for any support – particularly when she soon comes under the influence of the powerful oligarch Alexei Romanovich.





A mortal enemy of her husband, Romanovich makes it clear to her she is not welcome in St. Petersburg.

But what about the editorial department where her husband had worked? The lively chief editor Wolfgang Fischer, the secretive newsman Alfred Scherenberg and the tight-lipped computer specialist Grigori Rubinstein – are they friends or enemies?



Katharina finds herself caught in a web of intrigue spun by powerful cliques, both long established and new….

Trusting no one, Katharina nevertheless accepts Adam’s offer to take refuge in his secluded cottage. Finally, Rubenstein is able to hack into the subway’s surveillance system and learn who had kidnapped young Nikolai.




Before he can inform Katharina, however, his body is found floating in the icy Neva River.

Forced into realizing that she has stirred up a nest of human scorpions, Katharina fears she and her son will be the next to get stung…
