Facts and Figures to Operation „The Big Lift“

Duration of the operation: 18 June 1948 – 3o Sept. 1949.
Casualties during Airlift: 76 (31 Americans, 40 English and 5 Germans).
The daily record of transported goods (16 April 49): 12,940 tons in a single day.
60,000 spark plugs had to be changed in the airplanes on a monthly basis.
The costs of the Airlift can be calculated at approx. € 16 billion.
With 279,962 flights, 2,342,257 tons of goods were flown into Berlin.
In total, 57,000 people were involved in the operation.
The sum of total flying hours adds up to a flight time of more than 35 years.
The total distance of all Airlift flights was 175 million kilometers.
