Janitor Alfred Brunner is attempting to repair a broken TV antenna when he suddenly tumbles off the building’s roof to his death.
When Inspector Leo Kraft and his colleague Nina arrive at the scene, it’s obvious that Brunner’s death was a homicide… and not an accident.
Making the case complicated is the fact that everyone who lives in the building appears to have a reasonable motive for his murder. The only person who doesn’t seem suspicious is the nurse Regine Holzapfel.
Her caring treatment of other people and her self-sacrificing nature impress the investigative team. A disabled man quickly becomes the prime suspect when it’s discovered that he was Brunner’s partner in a jewelry theft ring.
It’s suddenly clear how the janitor was planning to pay for the building he had tended his entire life and was hoping to buy. Could this stash of money be the motive behind Brunner’s murder? Leo and Nina think the money might be hidden in Brunner’s apartment, where his son Daniel now lives.
Sure enough, Daniel soon discovers the money hidden under floorboards in his father’s apartment, along with a folder containing incriminating material Brunner had collected on all of the building’s tenants. Could the information in the folder be the key in determining his killer’s identity? Nina learns that there was another man involved in the jewelry ring, Friedeman Moeck, who is now also dead. 
She and Leo discover that Moeck died from a terminal disease and that the person who cared for him during his illness was none other than Regine Holzapfel. The investigation also reveals that Holzapfel was the daughter of a jeweler who met a tragic death during one of Brunner’s robberies. Now, Leo and Nina have a new suspect in their sights…
