The 34 year-old masseuse Helga Lauber is stabbed to death with a pair of scissors. In her apartment, investigators Mark and Rebecca surprise her neighbor Reinhart, who has obviously broken in using force. Determined to solve the brutal murder, Mark and Rebecca quickly discover a potentially hot lead – Reinhart’s wife Rosa was involved in a court case in which Helga Lauber was accused of prostitution.
As their suspicions concerning Lauber’s history as a prostitute are confirmed, the two become increasingly convinced that the murderer must have been one of her clients. But that trail appears to run into a dead end when Lauber’s appointment book only lists her clients by their initials, making it difficult to identify anyone who had paid her a visit.
Max Huber, the owner of the video store, was an old friend of the victim, but has absolutely no idea who could have wanted her dead. Mark and Rebecca are eventually able to prove that Reinhart was one of Helga Lauber’s former clients and attempt to pressure him into giving testimony during the initial trial proceedings – with success: 
Reinhart admits that none other than Max Huber, who has been pimping on the side, has been blackmailing him with potentially damaging photographs.
Although armed with that testimony and the secretive list of clients, Mark and Rebecca are still no closer to identifying her killer. But suddenly, Helga Lauber’s young son Georg disappears, which leads Mark and Rebecca to believe that he knows who murdered his mother…
