Dr. Daniel Guth, a successful brain surgeon, is about to move to the USA with his life partner Alana where he has accepted a position as professor. But just before they are about to leave, Daniel’s brother Till is involved in a tragic motorcycle accident and is brought to the hospital where Daniel insists on leading the operation. Till dies on the operating room table – leaving Daniel utterly devastated...
Unable to get over Till’s death, Daniel, heavy with guilt, then makes the radical decision to stop practicing medicine and even breaks up with Alana.
Needing to leave Berlin for a while, he attempts to escape his own demons by seeking refuge with a father-like friend, Professor Alexander, who lives in the mountains near Salzburg.
There he meets Miriam, the attractive heiress of the “Alpine Clinic”, and her son Frederik. After the death of her father she had taken on the responsibility of ensuring the hospital’s future and is presently fighting the mayor’s plans to convert the hospital into a health and beauty spa. 
Miriam is determined to maintain the hospital’s ideals of caring for its patients from operation to rehabilitation, and she is ready to fight for her vision.
The day Miriam meets Daniel she is sure she’s found the perfect doctor to run the hospital but Daniel’s decision to stop practicing medicine seems final. 
Then Alana shows up in town with the intention of winning him back and continuing on with their plans for a new life in the USA. He isn’t at all convinced and turns her down. But then a major bus accident occurs nearby and Daniel is compelled to step forward and assist – and saves little Frederick’s life in the process.
Wanting to escape the heavy pressure he’s feeling from everyone, Daniel prepares to take off, but runs into Frederick at the train station. After Frederik pleads with him to stay, it suddenly dawns on Daniel what he really wants in life. During a community hearing where Miriam is fighting for the hospital, Daniel suddenly arrives and energetically informs the crowd that he will take the position as the resident Doctor of the “Alpine Clinic”.
Not only has Dr. Daniel found a renewed purpose in life, but as well a new unexpected love in Miriam. Now for them both, a bright future at “Hospital Berghoff” awaits…
