Since the tragic death of his wife in a terrible fire that had destroyed their restaurant, Martin and his beloved daughter Katrin have been living at his father Joseph’s house. The horrific blaze had not only stolen from him the woman he loved – it also robbed Martin of his only means of income. Desperately struggling to make ends meet, Martin starts driving a taxi, his deepest concern being able to provide his daughter with the basic necessities.
By chance Martin makes the acquaintance of Judge Annemarie, who has also recently begun a new life. After the separation from her husband Felix, she and her son Peter have been making a go of it on their own.
After Martin is caught committing a harmless traffic violation, he finds himself standing before a court presided over by none other than Annemarie. Forced to follow due process, she hands down her judgment: Martin loses the case and must forfeit the only means of financial survival left to him – his taxi license. 
Finally, the downward spiral of his life reaches an unbearable low: A case worker from the Department of Youth Services appears at his door and threatens to take from him the only thing remaining that is dear to his heart – his beloved daughter Katrin! His world falling completely apart, Martin has no idea where to turn for help. 
Suddenly, a spark of hope: His father and his girlfriend Carmen come up with a brilliant idea that could solve all of Martin’s problems and put his life back on track...
