Since the death of her boyfriend Marcus, journalist Sara has been living a very secluded life. Marcus had been her entire world and without him, her life simply has no meaning anymore.
Then, a little bird flies into her apartment with a note attached to its leg. In the letter, the writer expresses grief over the loss of his girlfriend.
At work, she shares the remarkable story with her colleagues, realizing that she absolutely must write a story about this man.
Sara travels to the little island where the bird came from. It turns out that Georg, the romantic sender, lives directly next door to her hotel in his little house – and he doesn’t like strangers or small talk.
Not easily deterred, Sara sneaks into his house. When he unexpectedly comes home and surprises her, he immediately throws her out.
At a local bar, Sara learns the truth about Georg’s girlfriend: she didn’t dump him; she is dead! And Georg has been feeling responsible for her death ever since.
As time passes, the two slowly begin to grow close. When Georg questions her about her past, however, Sara flees from him and leaves the island.
Back in the city, she writes her eagerly awaited column and even manages to make the front page.
Then Georg suddenly appears at her door. It is the first time since his girlfriend died that he has flown his little plane – he had to see Sara again.
Just after Sara is finally able to open up to him, Georg happens to see the newspaper. Deeply hurt and disappointed, he leaves…
