Dette has never been thin, but she is firmly convinced that if she were slim and fit she would be the happiest person in the whole world.
When the arrogant macho Walter, sales director of a nation-wide optician chain, decides to enter the world of trendy glasses, he would prefer to simply ignore Dette. As she is by far his best salesperson, his business sense tells him otherwise.
Thus, despite her weight problem, the sales genius Dette becomes a member of the team at the newly opened branch store. Still, in the midst of her thin and attractive colleagues, Dette remains unhappy – especially after her appearance has a depressing consequence. Because the company strongly markets its “visual concept”, the “unsightly” Dette is banished to the back of the store.
In desperation, she seeks out hypnosis to solve her weight problem. The treatment does end up working, but in an unexpected way. Instead of losing an actual 40 pounds, the hypnosis leaves Dette with the perception that she has become thin.
Standing in front of a mirror, it is a slim, radiant woman glowing with wit, charm and energy that smiles back at her.
Dette’s newfound self-esteem affects her team colleagues, who suddenly find her most appealing. Even at the gym, she now dares to approach Jakob, a famous TV personality, and invites him out for a drink after training.
Sparks fly between them until Karen, Jakob's girlfriend and agent discovers their budding romance.
Finding it outrageous and insulting that she could lose her lover to a “fat” person, she unleashes a barrage of words that have an unfortunate effect.
Dette, snapping out of her hypnotic state, is suddenly faced with the reality of her true size.
Horrified and humiliated, she flees out of the store followed by Walter’s angry words that she’s just been fired. Overcome by the cruel and tragic series of events, Dette retreats back into her shell, convinced she will never again find happiness…
