It’s the year 1905, and 20-year old Anna is setting out from her rural family home to try her luck in the big city. From the moment she arrives, she is plagued by bad luck, especially when she falls in with the wrong crowd and comes close to losing her life. She is found in a weakened state and taken in by Friederike Gravenhorst, a young woman belonging to the prominent Gravenhorst family of chocolate manufacturers.
Friederike, a pleasant and generous woman, is committed to fighting for a better and more just world, so she gives Anna the opportunity to start a new and exciting life at the elegant family residence. Anna becomes a maid, but almost immediately has problems with the other domestic servants.
The lady’s maid Ida seems dead-set on destroying her reputation at any cost, but after the strict but fair butler Carl and the warm-hearted cook Emma intervene on her behalf, she’s allowed to stay on.
So it happens that Anna is a witness to the multifaceted life of the Gravenhorst family, consisting of its patriarch Arthur, his wife Charlotte and their demanding adult offspring Alexander, Julius and Friederike. As well, she’s back to navigating through the complex and turbulent world of their servants…
