moreThe Country Guy
A high-flying, know-it-all politician from the big city who’s expecting to be appointed Foreign Minster instead finds himself stranded in a countryside village…
Drama | Series, Season I: 10 x 45’
The night before Johannes is to be appointed Foreign Minister he is caught with his pants down. Literally. He's discovered in bed with an attractive woman… who unfortunately also happens to be the wife of the Austrian Ambassador to Berlin. The Press have a field day; it is the juiciest scandal to hit Germany for years.
The Chancellor is naturally furious and, instead of naming Johannes to the post, heads off to a conference without a single word. Desperate to talk to the Chancellor and save his career, Johannes races off… only to have a car accident on the way, which leaves him stuck overnight in a sleepy little village miles from nowhere.
By the following day the Chancellor has left for a state visit to the USA, Johannes is in disgrace and his former party friends have disowned him. Johannes, though, is far from defeated. Fate may have dealt him a cruel blow, but destiny comes to the rescue with what might just be a new beginning…
The accident that left Johannes stranded in a remote village occurred when he swerved to avoid a cow in the road and drove into a fence. The fence happened to belong to the house where village doctor Barbara Heinen lives with her 15- year-old daughter Toni.
Dazed but not injured, Johannes kept on insisting that he had to see the Chancellor as soon as possible about a job – so Barbara quite naturally diagnosed a severe concussion and gave him something to make him sleep until the following morning.
So when Johannes wakes up on the first day of the rest of his life to find that his promising career in politics now seems over, it isn't long before his natural resilience asserts itself; why not turn things to his advantage and stay for a while? He can rent the cottage at the bottom of Barbara's garden.
Johannes quickly strikes up a cautious friendship with Barbara's father Walter – a farmer of the old school – and there's no doubt that he finds Barbara a fascinating and attractive woman. The child-less Johannes even becomes a sort of substitute father for Toni. But what really convinces him to stay is the fact that the mayor's post is vacant… and such a clever politician as Johannes quickly sees the possibilities.
Wouldn't the public just love the story of the disgraced politician who repented and began again at a grass roots level to fix the country's woes?!
You can take the guy out of the city, but you can't take the city out of the guy. As Johannes attempts to implement change in the small town, it's quickly clear he's got to get more with the local program.
But although his plan is to use this small town mayor's position to hopefully spring back to his former elite political life, Johannes finds himself increasingly drawn to Barbara… and to life in the country.
