Elin enthusiastically begins her career as a medical intern.
Her adventurous internship finds her dodging hectic surgeons in the operating room, running the outpatients’ clinic along with a remarkable internist and working for a down-to-earth general practitioner.
As her colleagues have already learned, Elin finds that life in a hospital is not so different from that in the ‘real’ world: doctors are only human.
They make mistakes and can quickly become moody, disorganized or indifferent. Although Elin feels that she has come a long way, she soon realizes that there is a big difference between theory and practice.
The members of the medical staff are confronted by several difficult questions: is it possible to have both a promising career and a satisfying social life?
How can a doctor be considered competent if he places his own interests first? Are love and ambition really so incompatible?
After breaking up with her boyfriend, tension arises between Elin and the intern Hugo as Elin struggles to maintain a balance between her career and her private life.
But it is actually Arthur – the hospital’s night attendant who harbors literary ambitions – that has captivated her attention.
Meanwhile, Hugo begins a relationship with the radiologist Sabine, who has never completely abandoned the idea of returning to her husband.
Besides Elin and Hugo, there are three other interns at the hospital: Marjolein, Aaltje and Mo, for whom private life still chaotically interferes with their work, which makes their education all the more difficult.
That is most evident in Marjolein’s case, when she finds herself no longer able to suppress her feelings for Doctor Verstraeten – the boss.
