Formula One Abu Dhabi: Marina Circuit

Special | 1 x 45’

For some, the desert is a barren wilderness, but for one ambitious group of visionaries, the desert became the engineering challenge of a lifetime.

After a monumental 18-month construction project, an isolated strip of desert in Abu Dhabi has now become the world's most spectacular Formula One venue – “The Yas Marina Circuit”!

The construction was an incredible feat of logistics: 47,000 workers spent 25 million man-hours on this mammoth project, in which 200,000 cubic meters of steel-reinforced concrete were laid on a 25 square kilometer man-made island. The estimated cost of this gigantic undertaking was approximately 1 billion dollars.

This special – filmed entirely in HDTV – follows an amazing construction project that unites bold architecture with a unique vision of Formula One racing. The filmmakers were granted exclusive permission to shoot on location for two years and were allowed to accompany the project in its entirety from start to finish.

The film's unique visual language – supported by time-lapse photography and 3D animation – highlights a thrilling new era of motor sports. Additionally, the special offers interviews with Formula One celebrities like Bernie Ecclestone and the Car Sheik, as well as with key members of the construction crew.

The Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix features covered grandstands for 50,000 spectators. The 5.5 kilometer long circuit passes beneath a bridge connecting two parts of a luxury hotel, and then leads past the marina.

This is the first racing circuit to feature 1,500 LUX illumination, which literally turns night into day. The pit lane exit is underground – drivers accelerate through a tunnel and up a ramp to be catapulted back onto the track. The circuit's most exciting hairpin curve is located directly in front of a grandstand, which places spectators virtually in the midst of the action!

“The Yas Marina Circuit” – a defining monument in Formula One history!
